Fleas and Ticks Spread Diseases

Fleas and ticks are bloodsucking parasites adept at inviting themselves into your home. Dogs and cats are the ideal hosts for these parasites. Once fleas are of breeding age, a female flea can lay up to 2,000 eggs in her lifetime. Many people overlook the serious health problems that fleas and ticks can transmit to pets and humans.

Fleas and ticks can cause several serious health problems. Ticks can transmit Lyme Disease, a serious condition that can infect people too. Fleas can cause Flea Allergy Dermatitis, a type of allergy that causes excessve itching, scabs, sores and hair loss. Fleas can also carry Tape Worms, which can infect dogs, cats, and humans after ingesting just one flea.

Protecting your pets from fleas and ticks has several proven strategies. Westmonte veterinarians offer a variety of the best flea and tick products. For the feline family members, our number one product is Revolution which will protect your cat against fleas, heartworms, roundworms, hookworms, and ear mites. For those only using oral heartworm prevention for their cats, our recommendation is to use Cheristin topically for your cat to prevent fleas.
Canine Treatment

Protecting your pets from fleas and ticks has several proven strategies. Westmonte veterinarians offer a variety of the best flea and tick products. Our number one recommended product is Trifexis, mostly because it starts eliminating fleas in 30 minutes after ingested. In addition, it also helps to prevent heartworms, hookworms, tapeworms, roundworms and other parasites. Trifexis is only for dogs. DO NOT give to your cat.

House and Yard

Flea treatment will not eliminate fleas that may be already living in your house or yard. If you would like recommendations on how to handle these areas of infestation give us a call (407) 862-6892. We will be more than happy to help.

Helpful Hints to Get Rid of Fleas and Ticks

  • Administer a reputable flea and tick preventative to all pets in your household every 30 days
  • Quarantine infested pets - keep them away from non-infested pets until the problem is solved
  • Wash your pet's bedding and favorite rugs/blankets regularly in hot soapy water
  • Mow your lawn frequently
  • Vacuum regularly, especially anywhere dust collects, then dispose of the vacuum bag immediately
  • Treat your yard with flea and tick pest control
  • If possible, keep your pets out of long grass and bushes

Do Indoor Pets Need Flea and Tick Prevention?

Just because your indoor pet rarely leaves your home, they are not necessarily safe from fleas and ticks. Indoor pets are great hosts for fleas and ticks, and it only takes one flea to trigger a full blown infestation. Fleas and ticks can be passed on to your pet from your shoes, clothes, other pets, open doors, and windows.
