During your pet’s visit to the doctor, there may be certain tests recommended that require either urine or blood sample collection for either routine monitoring or determining causes of illness. Dr. Matagrano wants you to know that having your pet’s blood work checked is important to do routinely, as well as when they are sick. Blood work, pre-surgical or otherwise, is usually a combination of a complete blood count (CBC) and a blood chemistry analysis (CHEM). Other tests may be recommended as needed, such as thyroid testing, phenobarbital level testing, or urinalysis tests that can help monitor kidney function.

Pets, particularly seniors, should have wellness blood screening checked at every annual examination. This is due to the fact that changes on blood work that may indicate early disease that is often detectable before the pet shows any obvious symptoms of disease.

At Westmonte Animal Clinic, pre-surgical blood screening is performed before any surgery to check for underlying abnormalities that could complicate anesthesia. These tests are required for pet’s of ALL ages because being young does not mean that your pet is going to be automatically healthy. If any abnormalities are noted, certain procedures may be postponed while the concerns are addressed and resolved, when possible, prior to the surgical procedure.
